Open Hand Designs is an accessories and jewelry company that has social justice and global impact in their sights!
Open Hand has been on the ground working in India since 1999. They focus on employing “unhirables”, meaning people who would otherwise be frowned upon due to their caste, religion, a physical disability, or a disease such as HIV. They recently have started doing work in Swaziland!
These people are given a second chance at Open Hand, where they can receive medical care and job training. Their staff is paid a decent livable wage, above local standards, so their families can survive. In many cases they have also paid for education for their staff and members of their family. This is their fair trade…a fair wage, a safe and clean working environment, a valuing of cultural identity, and a desire to care for and empower the poorest of the poor.
They are not just an importer, they are the manufacturer. Because of this their design team in the United States is able to work daily with their manufacturing units to provide inspired and unique product ranges that are crafted by their skilled artisans. Their goal is to sell products that are beautiful, functional, and fashionable. They want the consumer to enjoy these products knowing they weren’t produced at the expense of another human being’s safety or dignity.
Even more amazing, they are committed as a company to helping fight human trafficking locally and nationally, and in doing so are giving back
10% of their sales to this cause.
Once such group they partner with is Not For Sale Campaign, a group whose focus is to work at the grass roots level to empower everyday people to recognize and help stop human trafficking.
We have been carrying their products for a while now and we couldn’t be more pleased with the response we have received!
